With their highly-anticipated comeback inching ever closer, the Wonder Girls will finally be returning to Korea within the week!

A representative of JYP Entertainment stated, “The Wonder Girls are currently spending busy days filming for their TV movie, ‘The Wonder Girls at the Apollo‘. If there aren’t any additional schedules to be added, they will be returning to Korea within the weekend and begin preparations for their comeback.”

The Wonder Girls are up against several girl groups like SNSD, Orange Caramel, and T-ARA. As such, an eye-catching concept is a must in order to stay in the spotlight. The Wonder Girls are known for their retro concepts now, so many are wondering what they’ll be bringing out next.

The representative revealed, “The album will be produced in a movie OST format. We’ll be planning our concept to fit around the feel of the song, so as opposed to retro, we feel that it will be more pop. The Wonder Girls will definitely be coming out with a new image, so please look forward to it.”

Wonder Girls Rep on Upcoming Comeback, SNSD vs. the Wonder Girls

Representatives of the Wonder Girls stated their thoughts on having to face SNSD for their comeback. In summation, the Wonder Girls will focus on making a more complete album instead of focusing on the competition. For this, the Wonder Girls are focusing on recording their album.

A representative of JYP Entertainment stated on October 17, “It would be a lie to say that we do not care about SNSD’s comeback timing. However, instead of focusing on competition we will focus more on making a better album.

About the album concept, JYP Entertainment kept everything under a tight lid. However, what they did reveal was that they would avoid a retro-concept and focus more on a trendier pop sound. Recording of the title went back and forth between South Korea and the US and finally finished.

JYP Entertainment stated, “The members continued recording in the US. Even though the Wonder Girls came back to South Korea last week, they still focused on recording. The concept will be not be retro like the past. We will be able to show you a new side.

The reason the Wonder Girls is avoiding a retro concept is probably because of the Wonder Girls’ TV movie. The album will be featured in the TV movie “Wonder Girls at the Apollo,” and the music will fit into the film. The music is also going to be released in the US market. hence, it will cater towards the musical taste of US audiences.

Currently, the comeback time is set at November but the exact date is unspecified. The title song has been set but the other songs have not been as of yet.

A representative of the Wonder Girls stated, “Fans have waited for a long time for the album so we are going to be vigilant for every single song that will be on the album. The Wonder Girls will appear in front of fans with a better album and perfect performance. Please anticipate and cheer them on.

The TV film, “Wonder Girls at the Apollo” will be broadcast on US cable television in 2012.

The Wonder Girls are making a comeback after a year and a half. Their last promotions in Korea were for the song "2 Different Tears" last year. After finishing filming for their movie "Wonder Girls at the Apollo" in LA in September, they quickly moved to preparing for their Korean album to return to Korea in the beginning of October.

This new album will show off a more sophisticated and mature side to the Wonder Girls in their songs and style, leaving behind their retro styles from songs like "Tell Me," "So hot," and "Nobody." The girls and the company are said to be working at their best to greet their Korean fans again after such a long period of time.

The album is planned to be released in early November and the girls will start promotions at the same time. Wonder Girls discuss their U.S. venture and their new album

In 2008, the Wonder Girls knocked on the door of the U.S. market and embarked on a long journey of self-discovery and growth. Though they were top stars in Korea, the girls were forced to start from the very bottom again with street performances.

Fast forward three years later, and we see the Wonder Girls return to Korea with some solid achievements under their belts. They’ve placed 76th on the Billboard Chart and became the first Korean artists to rank on the world-famous music barometer. They also completed a successful U.S. Tour, and filmed a movie with TV network, Teen Nick.

Prior to the official release of their 2nd album, the Wonder Girls sat down for an interview with MBN News to talk about their U.S. venture and their latest work.

The girls were first asked to elaborate on their thoughts about their U.S. venture. Leader Sunye stated, “To be honest, going to the U.S. was a rushed decision… There are many people who say that we’ve failed. However, we think of the past two years and a half as a period of preparation for our [actual] U.S. venture.
Ye Eun added, “There was never a day where something wasn’t new [to us]… We were able to continuously grow and learn through exchanges with world-famous musicians. The experience in the U.S. has led to a dramatic transformation of Wonder Girls.

The members revealed that the title track of the new album, “Be My Baby”, is one that everyone can enjoy. The melody is easy on the ears (like with “Tell Me”, “So Hot”, and “Nobody”), while the tempo is upbeat and the lyrics are easy to sing along to.

When the album is listened to as a whole, it’s apparent that their experiences in the U.S. seeped into their new sound. The song that Ye Eun composed for their album, “G.N.O.”, is a song that’s reminiscent of music heard in clubs. “Super B”, a track sung by Yubin and Sohee, also allows us to get a feel for the new type of sound that the girls have brought.

Ye Eun commented, “When I went to a club, I heard songs from Rihanna and LMFAO… We thought it would be nice if we could make club music, done right, in Korean.

When asked to talk about their growth, Sohee commented, “In the U.S., all the members lived together in one building… Due to the situation, we had more chances to converse with one another, and we became even closer.

For the first time, the girls will be up against SNSD for their comeback. Although both groups debuted in 2007, their promotion periods somehow never overlapped.

Sunye revealed, “We don’t really think of ourselves as rivals with SNSD. There are things they can do, and we have things we can do… I hope each can become a group that can be a source of strength and consolation for many people.

The Wonder Girls will be promoting more actively in the U.S. next year. Their first U.S. album will be released in sync with their feature movie, ‘Wonder Girls at the Apollo’, which will be aired through Teen Nick.

Five Rumors and the Truth about Wonder Girls
by: sOo JjI on Nov 7, 2011

See Larger Images,Please Click The Images.

Did the Wonder Girls really have to go to America?

There is no other way to express hardship. Whatever was thought as suffering could not match what the girls went through in America. In 2009 the Wonder Girls were a nationally treasured girl group in Korea. They were the best of the best, the very tip of the top. However, in less than two years, their high profile status was upset and flipped over. Their rivals have moved into their place and even their juniors have fought their way up to stardom.

People cocked their head to one side, and put a question mark to JYP's strategy of leaving the home turf. Why not just stay at the top in the K-pop world? Even fans were disappointed and didn't understand why the Wonder Girls had no other plans but to start activities in America.

To get to the point of the message here, the Wonder Girls' activities in America were not a waste of time. Instead of being safe at the top, they tackled (and still are tackling) a challenge. Although it was a tiring and relentless two years, the pain from their experiences in America eventually became medicine. The girls' musical foundation has definitely matured and developed and it shows in their new album "Wonder World."

On November 6 the Wonder Girls were interviewed by Dispatch News at Imperial Hotel. The girls were asked to comment and tell their sides of the story in response to five popular rumors.
Don't Hotlink The Images And Please Reupload By Yourself.
See Larger Images,Please Click The Images.

Rumor # 1: The Wonder Girls Failed in America

From "Tell Me" to "So Hot" to "Nobody," with each song the girls took the nation by storm. Therefore their departure to America in 2009 was a bit of a surprise. Two years of activities away from home just seemed like too long a time, and the reaction to the mini-album last year was at best mediocre. There can't help but be a lot of talk of the Wonder Girls having failed in America.

Sun Ye: We understand why people question why we left Korea. One can say it is because the expectations people had of us were big, but our side of the story was different. Two years ago, we were completely exhausted. We needed time to slowly reenergize and progress in our development. Our time in New York was probably the most important period of my life. In a diverse environment with a lot of cultures and people present, we learned a great deal. If it wasn't for that, there would have been no producing or rap making in the new album. We are truly grateful for our time in America, and it was an important one for us as a group.

Ye Eun: If we went to America now, things would have been a bit easier. The most important thing I learned is that if you want to succeed in foreign activities, the key is learning the language. You have to be understood in order to communicate your intentions. We have no trouble understanding and answering questions now, therefore we have acquired both the language and culture. Our clearly defined goals and visions for America, give us the confidence we need to move on.

It was also a hot issue when famous American producer Teddy Riley (who produced SNSD's "The Boys") posted on his Twitter that the Wonder Girls were "flops in America" and that "no body cares about them." The girls have responded by stating that they "understand his statement" and showed mild indifference by stating "if you get hit on the right cheek, offer them your left."

Sun Ye: There are a lot of people that think our activities in America are a failure, but things just got heated because Teddy Riley is a famous icon. Every single person out there is not going to like us or be our fans. The fact that Teddy Riley even knows who we are is an honor. But the thing is we aren't even thinking about closing promotions and activities in America. It is too early to judge whether or not we have failed or succeeded. On the outside it may seem like we aren't attaining the desired level of achievement, however there are many things we have learned and gained. All we ask is for fans to hear us out until the end and to support us.

Rumor # 2: The Wonder Girls Delayed Their Comeback Because of SNSD

The girls have stated that they had the confidence, but the way their comeback was implemented has fans questioning that confidence. The Wonder Girls decided to delay their comeback by three weeks, although an obvious competition between both girl groups was anticipated. People are saying that the comeback got delayed due to fear of this competition against SNSD.

Sun Ye: There was a lot of debate on how to implement plans for our new album even after the decision was made to make a comeback in Korea. In the end, the album was produced, but there were a lot of different opinions on regularities and irregularities. The decision to even make a comeback was not planned in advance, so the time we had to prepare was a very short one. For our fans in Korea we decided to make a comeback, and it was just a matter of the amount of time it took to have good music made and ready.

Yoo Bin: We have been in the business for four to five years, and this is the first time our comeback coincided with SNSD, so we are fully aware that both groups are going to be compared and pitted against. But that doesn't mean we have to always be conscious of it and plan deliberately according to this competition. In popular media there is a diverse demand for what people want. What we can't produce and supply, SNSD is there to fill that empty spot, and vice versa. We are just happy and grateful that we can take part in such a energetic market called K-Pop.

The girls have also expressed that SNSD were great colleagues and friends that worked towards the same goal of spreading and influencing the K-Pop scene. The girls have monitored SNSD's work with their latest single, "The Boys," and are excited to be working alongside each other this time around.

Rumor # 3: Retro Doesn't Work Anymore

Ye Eun: There was a great deal of dispute over our title track. What people want within mainstream pop culture is very diverse. While some people wanted to see retro Wonder Girls, others wanted to see a different side to us. It was our challenge to come out with a fresh concept without losing the Wonder Girls touch. We found that middle ground with "Be My Baby" - the song falls somewhere in between trend and retro.

Yoo Bin: "Be My Baby" is not our usual retro music, but it is fresh with a retro touch to it. It's a very soulful and uptempo song, but at the same time it has a 60's style retroness to it. The outfits also follow the same concept. We made a change by adding leather, but polka dots kept a retro foundation. We got a lot of help from Beyonce's choreographer and Katy Perry's stylist.

Rumor # 4: Wonder Girls Can't Sing Live

After music, fans demand live performances. It is known that less vocally talented Sohee and Hye Lim are given little singing time, and main vocals Sun Ye and Ye Eun are known for their frequent off note incidents. People say that Wonder Girls are poor live performers.

Sohee: For this album we tried a lot of new things while dividing songs into parts. We decided to change things up and not follow the template we followed before. In "Be My Baby," I sing more than four lines during the introduction, and it is the same for Hye Lim. There was a lot of pressure, and we had a lot of difficulty with some parts of the song, but I developed a sense of responsibility and it was a chance for me to practice a lot more vocally. Fans can be sure to expect a lot of things from our activities.

Sun Ye: We tried hard to produce our own sound. We tried a new soulful and fresh singing method. When you listen you might think the new sound comes from higher notes or the increase in ad-libs, but it is actually from a more relaxed and comfortable style that we adapted.

Rumor # 5: Wonder Girls are Outdated

Although there are great expectations for the girls on one side, there are also those that are more cynical. There is talk that Wonder Girls are out of season.
Because of spending time in America, many fans have slowly started to forget about the Wonder Girls.

Hye Lim and Yoo Bin: Waiting two years is a long time. So we wanted to make a comeback that filled in all of the empty spots that fans developed during the wait. We satisfied from the fact that people are happy and excited after hearing our music. We also plan to appease fans and become closer to them by trying our best and participating on music programs and variety shows.

Sohee and Sun Ye: There is a benefit to having been gone for such a long time. We can comeback with an outlook of a new comer. It feels exactly like the days when we got nervous from seeing the red light on the camera go on. We see it as an opportunity to grab people's hearts. Our goal is to give a positive influence under the name "Wonder Girls." Every day has a beginning and an end, and we still have a long ways to go.

Rookie singer Huh Gak will serve as some fierce competition for the Wonder Girls that have just made their comeback after a long hiatus.

The Wonder Girls’ title track “Be My Baby” was released on November 7th and achieved an all-kill immediately upon release, seizing the #1 slot on major music sites such as Melon, Monkey3, Naver Music, and more, for two days straight.

All the songs on their new album are receiving explosive reactions from fans. Songs like “G.N.O” which was written and composed by member Ye Eun, as well as “Girls Girls“, and “Me, In“- a remake of singer Shin Joong Hyun‘s hit song have all been highly ranked on the charts.

On the other hand, singer Huh Gak who has recently released his official first album has swept the charts with his debut song “Hello“, and his follow-up track “I Told You I Wanna Die“, was met with similar reactions from fans. His song is currently #1 on Mnet.com, KT Olleh and other major music sites, proving himself to be a promising rookie musician.

Huh Gak’s new song “I Told You I Wanna Die” conveys the heart of a man desperate to win back a lover who’s left him. The Wonder Girls and Superstar K2 winner Huh Gak have both released tracks at the same time, and are going head to head on the charts. The two title songs are of completely different genres of dance and ballad, and it should be interesting to see who comes out on top.

To many, the Wonder Girls‘ venture and extended stay in the United States seemed like career suicide. In fact, many were quick to label them as ‘failures’ because they didn’t make as strong of an impact in the States as they hoped. Knowing this, the girls worked relentlessly for the past two years to reclaim their lost presence.

Were they successful? In one word: yes.

Their second album, “Wonder World“, allowed the Wonder Girls to serve a nice glass of ‘shut-it-haters’ while chasing away the doubt clouding their comeback.

Before the full analysis, let’s break it down track-by-track, shall we?

The album opens with “G.N.O.” (or ‘Girls Night Out’), an American-flavored club pop track composed by member Ye Eun herself. Admittedly, the composition is a bit messy: there are random saxophones blaring here and there, and the lyrics are bland.

Still, it’s a solid opener that proves right away that this album is a turning point in the girls’ career. It cleverly bridges their experience in the U.S. with pop standards in Korea.

We’re then hit with their lead single, “Be My Baby“. One could easily mistake it for a certain Mariah Carey Christmas song, but “Be My Baby” has a charm of its own.

Yes, there’s a retro flair in there, but the rap segment and M.I.A.-esque synths rescue the track from being pulled back to their old sound. The high-energy number is the perfect re-introduction for the girls to the Korean music scene, and an intelligent choice for the ‘title track’ position.

Unlike their previous album, we hear the girls experimenting with new genres of music, such as rock. “Me, in” was introduced in the girls’ first video teaser for their album promotions. The song is a modernized electric guitar-heavy version of Shin Jung Hyun‘s “The Beauty”, a Korean classic.

The girls continue to rock in their track “Stop!“, which may actually be one of the greatest Wonder Girls tracks ever to be released. Why? Maybe it’s the fun space-age cowboy element, or maybe it’s just refreshing to see some attitude delivered right in a K-Pop track.

A J.Y. Park – produced album wouldn’t be complete without his trademark heartfelt ballads. “Dear. Boy” is one of their most memorable downtempo tracks yet, with rapper Yubin opening the track and ‘visual’ Sohee taking over the melancholic chorus. If the girls were planning on performing a downtempo song for their comeback stage, they should definitely go with this one as a demonstration of their versatility.

The low point of the album is found in “Act Cool“. Although it might be fun for fans to stan over, the cringeworthy lyrics and uninteresting production makes the track easily forgettable and cheapens the overall quality of the album. We’re not really questioning Lim‘s talents as a singer or rapper, but everything here seems a bit too forced. With rap, we’re supposed to expect witty lyrics; instead, we encounter an ‘about-me’ listed in a vacuous manner. It’s unfortunate that fellow labelmate San E didn’t do much to enhance the track either.

The album closes with the all-English track “Nu Shoes” which follows the same festive vein as the album’s lead single. Could it be a hint of what’s to come for the Wonder Girls’ upcoming English album or American TV soundtrack? “Nu Shoes” is easily one of the strongest songs on the album and is the perfect transition for their upcoming American foray.

Wonder World’ is a true collection of songs measuring the girls’ level of growth over the years, and a testament of what can happen when K-Pop artists take their time with music.

Though the girls received a lot of flak for being M.I.A. for so long, their absence from the K-pop scene was probably the best decision they ever made. We said goodbye to the tired retro-repetitive formula that the girls once reigned the scene with, and were introduced to a completely solid pop album, a rarity in K-Pop.

Through ‘Wonder World’, the Wonder Girls ultimately showed that taking time to produce a good album with a clear, comprehensible theme all the way through has a bigger payoff than churning out single after single, album after repackaged album. If only other idol groups in K-Pop could take their cue from this, it could really lead to better musical quality in the industry overall.
